URA Destroys 180 Tons of Smuggled Goods

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has destroyed 180 tons of smuggled goods at Luwero Industries, including cosmetics, used underwear, beer, wines, spirits, computers, and drugs.

Milton Rahuka, URA’s manager for warehousing in the customs department, stated the items, valued at over a billion shillings in taxes, were confiscated over more than a year of enforcement operations, primarily from the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

The consignment will be crushed and directly landfilled due to its sensitivity and bulkiness, explained Ian Mukisa, the supervisor for waste management at Luwero Industries.

Jane Okello, the general manager of Rugarwana Industries, noted more contraband, including cigarettes, electronics, and soap, awaits transportation.

Boxes containing copies of the Holy Quran were found among the contraband but were not destroyed.
