Police have announced the launch of a large-scale operation targeting motorcycles and other motorists across the country.
Speaking on Monday, traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura stated that the nationwide operation aims to address multiple violations and confirmed that the collaboration with the military will continue until there is significant improvement in road safety across Uganda.
“The operation will target individuals without driving licenses, those with expired licenses, and those driving vehicles for which they are not licensed. Additionally, boda boda riders without crash helmets, reflective jackets, and those violating one-way rules will be targeted,” Kananura explained.
He added that the crackdown will also focus on individuals driving under the influence of alcohol, particularly during nighttime hours.
This initiative comes in the wake of an ongoing campaign against drivers using unauthorized sirens, floodlights, and roof lights. The joint effort with the military particularly focuses on government vehicles, including those from State House and the army, that are breaking traffic laws.
Numerous vehicles, including those belonging to ministers and other high-profile individuals, have already been impounded as part of this campaign to restore order on the roads.
