Parliament’s Appointments Committee has approved the appointment of Edward Akol as the new Auditor General of Uganda. Sources within the panel, chaired by Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among, indicate that the MPs overwhelmingly supported Akol’s appointment.
Akol will replace Uganda’s longest-serving Auditor General, John Muwanga, who has held the position since 2001 and is retiring upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
The Office of the Auditor General is Uganda’s supreme audit institution, mandated by the Constitution to produce reliable and high-quality reports. It plays a crucial role in promoting good governance, transparency, and effective accountability in the management and use of public resources.
Akol has been with the Office of the Auditor General since August 1994, steadily rising through the ranks to become the director of audit and assistant auditor general in charge of audit. His extensive experience has earned him President Yoweri Museveni’s appointment to lead the institution.
In addition to Akol’s appointment, the committee also vetted Linda Lillian Mugisha Tumusiime and Anthony Patrick Wabwire for their positions as judges.
