Namisindwa District — In a significant step towards reducing maternal mortality, Dr. Sarah Khanakwa Bwayo, the Woman MP Aspirant for Namisindwa District, has launched the pioneering “Safe Birth Delivery” campaign.

This initiative, which is the first of its kind in the district, was officially launched on July 5, 2024 at Bupoto Health Centre III.

The campaign aims to distribute over 100 mama kits and basins to expectant mothers across the district, thereby ensuring the health and safety of both mothers and newborns during childbirth.

The Standard learnt that each mama kit includes a one-meter piece of cotton cloth (baby wrapper), laundry soap, a pair of gloves, cotton wool, small gauze, cord ligature, and a meter of polythene sheet for use on the delivery table.

Nanjala Beatrice, a local mother, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “When visiting health facilities, we are often asked to provide mama kits, which many cannot afford.”

In addition to the “Safe Birth Delivery” campaign, Dr. Sarah has also organized a series of free integrated medical camps throughout Namisindwa District. These camps aim to provide a broad range of essential healthcare services to the community free of charge.

Speaking about her motivation, Dr. Sarah said, “Our community faces numerous health challenges, and access to quality healthcare remains a significant barrier for many. These medical camps are designed to bring essential health services directly to the people, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to receive the care they need.”

The medical camps will offer services including eye care, general medicine, TB screening, hepatitis B vaccination, family planning, deworming, malaria screening and treatment, and sickle cell trait screening.

The schedule and venues for the medical camps are as follows:

  • Bukhaweka TC: July 8th & 9th, 2024
  • Bunambale: July 11th & 12th, 2024
  • Nabitsiki: July 14th & 15th, 2024
  • Bumbo: July 17th & 18th, 2024
  • Magale: July 19th & 20th, 2024

She will host these events with support from KEDDI Foundation, BETBRA Namisindwa, Uganda Red Cross Society, AIDS Information Centre, and ARCH Resources. These organizations have collaborated to ensure the initiative’s success, aiming to enhance healthcare accessibility and overall health outcomes in the region.

Residents of Namisindwa District are encouraged to participate in these events to receive comprehensive medical care and health education, significantly contributing to the community’s well-being.

Dr. Sarah Khanakwa is committed to visiting the entire district to distribute mama kits to mothers in need, reinforcing her dedication to promoting safe birth delivery practices in Namisindwa.
