Ugandan lakes have witnessed a remarkable resurgence in fish stocks, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Lt Col Mercy Tukahirwa and the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU).

This increase has not only boosted government revenue and revitalized the fishing industry but also ensured food security for millions of Ugandans.

During a recent visit to Lake Eco Fish Processing Ltd, Lt Col Mercy was informed that factories are now receiving substantial quantities of Nile perch.

This significant increase is a testament to the success of conservation efforts. Once on the decline due to overfishing and illegal practices, the Nile perch is now thriving thanks to the vigilant monitoring and enforcement by the FPU.

Tilapia, another popular fish species among Ugandans, has also made a notable comeback in Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga. This resurgence is largely attributed to the FPU’s efforts to curb illegal fishing and protect breeding grounds. The return of Tilapia has delighted both fishermen and consumers, providing an affordable source of protein for many households.

The FPU, under Lt Col Mercy’s leadership, has been pivotal in combating illegal fishing. In a recent operation, over 300 engines were confiscated from the Congolese community engaged in large-scale illegal fishing.

This crackdown has led to a substantial increase in fish stocks as illegal activities have significantly decreased. Her outreach programs have also been crucial in promoting sustainable fishing practices.

During her visit to the fishing community in Bundibugyo, she encouraged locals to adopt environmentally friendly fishing methods and emphasized the importance of preserving fish stocks for future generations.

The impact of Lt Col Mercy’s efforts is evident in the revitalization of the fishing industry. By 2005, Uganda had 22 fish processing factories earning USD 143.6 million annually and employing 5,600 workers.

However, illegal fishing caused the collapse of these factories, leaving only eight operational by the time Lt Col Mercy took office. In her short tenure, 13 factories have resumed operations, generating USD 83.588 million in revenue for Uganda.

The resurgence of fish stocks and the revival of the fishing industry have also positively impacted local communities. Fishermen are now able to earn a decent living, and the availability of fish has improved food security for millions of Ugandans.

Increased government revenue has enabled investment in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

Lt Col Mercy and the FPU’s success serves as a model for sustainable fisheries management in Uganda. Her efforts demonstrate that with determination, leadership, and community engagement, it is possible to restore depleted fish stocks and promote environmentally friendly fishing practices.

In summary, Lt Col Mercy’s outstanding leadership and innovative approaches have led to a resurgence in fish stocks on Ugandan lakes, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of Uganda. Her commitment to conservation and collaboration with stakeholders sets a benchmark for sustainable marine management and environmental protection on the African continent.
