Police in Otuke District, Northern Uganda, are actively pursuing a 37-year-old man accused of stabbing a police officer with a sharp object before fleeing the scene.
The suspect, identified as Jimmy Ocen, a resident of Teboke Village in Omwonyle Parish, Ogor Sub-county, allegedly ambushed Cpl Alfred Awio, stabbing him twice in the back.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon as Cpl Awio, the officer in charge of Ogor Police Station, was returning from a burial in Teboke.
Reports indicate that prior to the attack, Ocen had assaulted his wife at the same burial. He then reportedly lay in wait for Cpl Awio at Awonkok Swamp.
SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, spokesperson for the North Kyoga region police, confirmed the attack, stating that law enforcement officers are diligently searching for the suspect, who remains at large.
Okema noted that the crime scene has been meticulously examined and documented, an eyewitness statement has been recorded, and the suspected weapon used in the attack has been recovered and exhibited. Authorities are making concerted efforts to apprehend the suspect and ensure he is brought to justice.
Following the attack, Cpl Awio was swiftly transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Mr. Jasper Okengo, the LC3 chairperson of Ogor Sub-county, described Ocen as a drug addict and a habitual offender within the village.
He mentioned that Ocen had recently been released on police bond after being arrested for assaulting his grandfather, but had subsequently jumped bond. Okengo suspects that the attack on Cpl Awio was an act of retaliation for the previous arrest.
