Police are investigating circumstances under which a mother dumped her baby in a toilet in Kama Village, Nakifuma district.
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 8, at around 11:00 AM.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the police received a distress call from members of the Nakifuma community, reporting that a resident, Diana Kotusiime, had given birth and then allegedly dumped the baby in a toilet.
“Our police responded as soon as possible, but fortunately for the baby, the community, working together, had already retrieved the newborn and rushed the child to Dana Hospital,” Owoyesigyire stated.
Both the mother and the newborn are currently receiving medical treatment at Dana Hospital.
Katusiime was found in critical condition and had been hospitalized.
“We also managed to evacuate the mother, Kotusiime, who was also in really, really bad shape in the hospital,” added Owoyesigyire.
The police have announced that Kotusiime will be charged with attempted murder.
“After she had this child, she decided to throw this child in the toilet,” Owoyesigyire confirmed.
This case adds to a disturbing trend within the Kampala metropolitan area, where incidents of mothers abandoning their newborns or aborting grown fetuses and disposing of them in toilets or water channels are increasingly being reported.
Owoyesigire expressed gratitude to the Nakifuma community for their swift action, which ultimately saved the baby’s life.
“We want to inform members of the public that justice will be served against the child that was going to be murdered,” Owoyesigyire concluded.
