Mbale: Makerere University is grieving the loss of two esteemed lecturers from its Department of Community Education. These dedicated educators, who also served as part-time staff members, played vital roles in teaching the Administrative Law Officers course across various university centres.

Mr. Masaba Gabriel, hailing from Nabumali in Mbale, was a committed part-time lecturer. In addition to his academic role, he served as a police detective with the Uganda Police Force. Tragically, in his mid-30s, Mr Masaba passed away and was laid to rest in Nabumali Town Council last week. His untimely death has left a significant void in both the academic and law enforcement communities.

The department also mourns the loss of Mr Martin Mungau, another part-time lecturer who taught at various university centres nationwide.

Mr Mungau served as a Grade One Magistrate under the judiciary and was a highly trained lawyer and administrator with master’s degrees in both law and administration. His extensive knowledge and commitment to education were highly valued by the university.

The Department of Community Education at Makerere University operates several centres nationwide, providing essential training in various disciplines.

These centres, some of which are over 60 years old, offer courses including Administrative Law Officers, Public Administration and Management, Project Planning and Management, and Medical Records Management. The Mbale branch, established in 1966, serves the regions of Teso, Bugisu, Sebei, and Bukedi, among others.

Mr Julius Arinaitwe, a lecturer in the Department of Community Education, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“As a university community, we are deeply saddened by their passing. We shall miss them, and we ask God to strengthen their families during this difficult time,” he said.

The passing of Mr. Masaba and Mr. Mungau is a significant loss to Makerere University and the broader academic and professional community.
