Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gen Jeje Odongo has asked the British High Commissioner to Uganda, Kate Airey for evidence confirming that Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among owns properties in the United Kingdom.

Odongo and Ambassador Kate met at Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Ministry in Kampala on Thursday.

On May 2, President Museveni asked Odongo to engage British authorities for the relevant data about her claims that Among had a house in London, UK.

“She (Kate) also told me about sanctioning the Rt. Hon. Anita Among. I said: “Why?” She said that Anita Among has got a house or houses in UK and has got bank accounts from which she pays school fees for her children who are studying there,” said Museveni in a letter to Odongo on May 2.

He added: “I, therefore, told the High Commissioner that the Uganda Government would demand from the UK Government more information about this. Attorney-General and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advise on how this can be done and the appropriate authority to go ahead and do it.”

According to Chimpreports, since then, Kate has not provided evidence to back up the information she delivered to the president that Among had properties in the UK.

Odongo reportedly told Kate that, “If you do not have the information, let us know so we can brief the president accordingly.”

President Museveni on May 23, 2024 wrote to Speaker Anita Among seeking clarification on reports that she owned a property in London, United Kingdom.

Gen Odongo received and met with William W. Popp, the Ambassador of the United States of America to Uganda, yesterday

London flat

“I have got information that is contrary to what you told me, that you, indeed, own a house in London in the form of Flat 4, Silk House, 7 Waterden Road, London, E20 3AL, United Kingdom,” said Museveni in a letter to Among.

“Do you own that house or are you renting it?” Museveni asked Among.

Ugandan officials conducted a search with UK’s Land Registry which showed that the apartment is owned by the London Legacy Development Corporation, the organisation behind Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Formed in April 2012, the London Legacy Development Corporation’s purpose was to use the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of the London 2012 Games and the creation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to develop a dynamic new heart for east London, creating opportunities for local people and driving innovation and growth in London and the UK.

Among has since denied owning any property in the UK, saying, “I don’t even have a pussycat there.”

The development could embarrass the British government if it’s proven that Kate provided flawed or false information to President Museveni.

U.S. Ambassador

Meanwhile, Odongo today received and met with William W. Popp, the Ambassador of the United States of America  to Uganda.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry said during their meeting, the two principals “engaged in productive discussions on various matters of mutual interest, further strengthening the bilateral relations between their nations.”

Earlier today, U.S. authorities slapped sanctions on former Ministers Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu for their alleged “significant corruption related to conduct that misused public resources and diverted materials from Uganda’s neediest communities.”

Among was also sanctioned for her reported “involvement in significant corruption tied to her leadership of Uganda’s Parliament.”

The Minister of State for Finance Amos Lugolobi, who survived the U.K sanction, is now designated by the U.S. as well as Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, the former Deputy Chief of UPDF.
