The government of Uganda has announced plans to phase out petrol-powered motorcycles in favor of electric bikes as part of its efforts to combat air pollution and conserve the environment.

This initiative was revealed by State Minister for Kampala, Christopher Kyofatogabye, during the launch of a partnership scheme involving Bodaboda Chairperson, riders, and Honda Company, known as the Honda 110 Club, in Ndeeba, Rubaga Division.

Kyofatogabye highlighted that Kampala was ranked fifth among the top ten most air-polluted cities in Africa, with an average annual pollution level of 26.1 micrograms per cubic meter, significantly higher than the global recommended level of 5 micrograms per cubic meter, according to a 2023 report.

To address this critical issue, the government has tasked the Ministry of Science with conducting a pilot study to evaluate the implementation of electric motorcycles in the transport system, particularly within the bodaboda industry. This study aims to ensure a smooth transition without disrupting the livelihoods of those reliant on this sector.

Maria Namusoke Kamoga, the Managing Director of Honda Company in Uganda, explained that the partnership aims to provide not only motorcycles on loan but also health insurance schemes and additional support for riders.

She says this initiative is designed to protect both the environment and the people working within the bodaboda industry.

Rubaga Mayor, Mbeeraze Mawula, urged the government to carefully consider any reduction in bodaboda stages, emphasizing that such a move could negatively impact the large number of youths who depend on this industry for their livelihood.
