The Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA) has commended the government for expeditiously amending various outdated laws. The proactive measures aim to modernize the veterinary landscape in the country.

The President of the Uganda Veterinary Association, Dr. Daniel Kasibule, expressed his appreciation during the 24th Celebrations of the World Veterinary Day, which were commemorated in Rakai.

Dr. Kasibule specifically lauded the recent passing of the Veterinary Practitioners Bill, previously known as the Veterinary Surgeon’s Act, as a pivotal milestone for the veterinary profession in Uganda.

Dr. Daniel Kasibule highlighted the importance of the legislative amendments in advancing the veterinary sector and aligning it with global best practices. He emphasized that the updated laws would not only benefit veterinary practitioners but also contribute to the overall health and well-being of animals, humans, and the environment through the One Health approach.

“We are reminded of the critical role that veterinarians play as essential health workers in safeguarding the well-being of not only animals, but humans and our shared environment as these three facets are closely interconnected,” Kasibule said at the celebrations organised by the Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA) in partnership with Ministry of Agriculture and Animal industry and fisheries (MAAIF), the Food and Agriculture organisation FAO and VSF-G.

The amendments to the outdated laws signify a commitment from the government to prioritize the development of the veterinary sector and address the evolving needs of the industry.

The UVA President underscored the significance of such legislative reforms in fostering a conducive environment for veterinary professionals to thrive and deliver quality services to the community.

“As we reflect on the theme of this year’s World Veterinary Day – Veterinarians are essential health workers – let us recommit ourselves to supporting and empowering veterinarians in their noble endeavors. Let us advocate for increased investment in veterinary education, research, policy, transport, laboratory and diagnostic infrastructure ensuring that these essential health workers have the tools and resources they need to fulfill their vital mission,” he added.

Under secretary Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Ssegawa Gyavira was the chief guest.

He was welcomed by host District Veterinary Officer Dr.Elias Kizito Nsubuga, president of UVA central chapter Dr Ismail Assimue and VP UVA Dr Nabadda. Key stake holders in the week’s activities included DDA, BAM Animal Clinic, COVAB,  NAGRIC and RAKAI DLG.

Several activities that involved vets, environmental officers and DSFPs drawn from districts of Kalangala, Buvuma, Rakai, Gomba and Kyotera, preceded the celebrations. They were:

 PPR and Rabies Vaccination:
Supported by MAAIF, VSF-G & Rakai Veterinary Staff
 One Health Training:
Conducted by FAO and the National One Health Platform (MAAIF, MoH, MWE and UWA).
 Surgical Camp for Dogs & Cats:
Led by Uganda Small Animal Practitioners Association (USAPA)
 Farmers Training in Dairy, Poultry, Piggery, and Goats:
Improved Management Techniques by Partners

The celebration of the World Veterinary Day in Rakai served as a platform to recognize the pivotal role of veterinarians in safeguarding public health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability. The event further highlighted the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to promote holistic approaches to healthcare and disease prevention.

As Uganda continues to make strides in advancing its veterinary sector, the efforts to modernize legislation and regulations are poised to create a more robust framework for sustainable development and improved health outcomes for both animals and humans.

The Uganda Veterinary Association remains optimistic about the future of the veterinary profession in the country and looks forward to continued collaboration with the government and relevant stakeholders to further elevate the standards of veterinary care and promote the One Health approach for the benefit of all.
