A significant portion of the Kampala-Masaka highway between Busega and Kyengera caved in on Sunday following a heavy downpour, leading to severe traffic disruptions.
Allan Ssempebwa, spokesperson for the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), confirmed that the damage was due to a collapse in the drainage systems along the highway.
“We are experiencing a failure at the section of the highway; the drainage systems have collapsed. What we are doing right now is mobilizing materials and other necessary equipment to intervene as quickly as possible,” Ssempebwa stated.

The collapse has resulted in a heavy traffic jam along the affected section as efforts to repair the damage are underway. Commuters are advised to seek alternative routes where possible and to stay informed about updates from UNRA as they address this critical infrastructure failure.
“In the interim, we have diverted traffic. From Kampala to Masaka, you stop at Busega to join the Nsangi – Buloba road, and join Kampala – Masaka highway. Likewise, vehicles coming from Masaka will use Budo – Kasenge road to Nateete to join Kampala,” said Ssempebwa.

“We believe, this is going to allow us expedite the restoration works at this section which we should be able to deliver by not more than a week.”
This is the second time within a span of four months, this road is sinking in.
