Eight police officers attached to Kira-Police Division in Kira municipality, Wakiso district have been arrested for reportedly stealing Shs 60m exhibit cash.
Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said out of Shs 192 million that was stolen from Shatrah Namata, an employee of a hardware shop in Nateete, only about Shs 160 million reached the police station.
The three thugs who were reportedly moving in a Toyota Noah registration number, UBN 360N were intercepted at Naalya roundabout by the police patrol that was trailing them with the help of boda-boda riders.
Two suspects were arrested in the process; one suspect who was fleeing was shot and injured before his colleagues got apprehended. A bag of cash was recovered and taken as an exhibit to Kira-Division police.
“The lady [Namata] told police that they were going to bank Shs 192 million, but the first mistake the officers made was not to count that money immediately on the scene, so it’s hard to tell whether it was Shs 160 million or Shs 192 million,” Enanga said.
Enanga explains that of the Shs 160 million that the officers reported to the police, another Shs 30 million got lost in the process of counting and recording the exhibit.
“Our cameras are showing us that when the money reached the counter of police, some of our officers poured it on the flow for counting. But an undisciplined officer stole another Shs 30 million,” Enanga added.
This is not the first incident where exhibits are being stolen by police officers. In 2022, five police officers attached to Katwe Police Division were arrested for burning an office in a bid to destroy evidence.
