Kabale University made a decisive move to dismiss Professor Benon Basheka from his role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in Charge of Academic Affairs due to gross misconduct and insubordination.
The announcement came through a press statement dated March 13, 2024, and signed by Professor Joy Constance Kwesiga, the University Vice-Chancellor.
Although the statement was released on Friday, Professor Basheka had already handed over his office on Wednesday, marking the culmination of disciplinary proceedings against him.
Professor Kwesiga, when contacted, confirmed Basheka’s termination but emphasized that it was the outcome of deliberations by the University disciplinary committee, Appointments Board, and University Council, where he was recently found guilty of misconduct.
According to inside sources, Professor Basheka appeared before the University disciplinary committee, Appointments Board, and University Council, admitting to charges of Abuse of Office, Abetting Crime, and Gross Insubordination.
These violations were found to be contrary to the Kabale University Human Resource Manual. Consequently, the committees unanimously voted to relieve him of his duties.

Efforts to reach Professor Basheka for comment were unsuccessful as his mobile phone remained unreachable.
It’s worth noting that on February 7, 2024, Professor Basheka petitioned the office of the National Council for Higher Education, raising concerns about various irregularities at Kabale University.
These included allegations of mismanagement of students’ results, unauthorized changes in fees structures, and the unauthorized alteration of students’ sponsorship status, among others.
The dismissal of Professor Basheka marks a significant development in the ongoing disciplinary proceedings at Kabale University, underscoring the institution’s commitment to upholding standards of professionalism and accountability in its leadership ranks.
