GREATER MPIGI: ONC Coordinator Kaweesi Sulaiman, Former Min. Amelia Kyambadde Lead NRM Leaders in Party Register Update Exercise

The Office of the National Chairman (ONC) Coordinator for Geater Mpigi, Mr. Kaweesi Sulaiman has urged all coordinators and stakeholders within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Mpigi to collaborate in devising strategies to draw more NRM supporters into active participation in the ongoing nationwide registration exercise.

The meeting, which took place at the Mpigi NRM Offices on Thursday, March 14, was also graced by Former Trade Minister and Senior Presidential Advisor, Hon Amelia Kyambadde, the administrator of the NRM’s office in Mpigi, Mpigi District ONC Coordinators Rashid Mwanje, and Mr Lwanga Khalifah Sulaiman as well as Subcounty chairpersons and Subcounty registrars from across greater Mpigi.

Mr Sulaiman urged all stakeholders from both the secretariat and the national chairman’s office to collaborate in mobilizing the masses to register and update their details, enabling them to participate in NRM Primaries and other party activities leading up to the 2026 elections.

He stressed that updating the party register (yellow book) marks the beginning of preparations for the general elections, serving as the initial phase in the party’s roadmap for internal and general elections.

“I implore those overseeing this exercise to be very careful and avoid corrupt party members with personal interests conflicting with party regulations. We expect coordinators to recruit new members and surpass current membership levels, as numbers hold significant weight in elections,” he remarked.

Mr Sulaiman urged party cadres to grasp the four core principles of the NRM – Patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy – to address the challenges faced by Ugandans.

He underscored the importance of member involvement in the exercise, emphasizing that only registered members would be eligible to vote in the structural and primary elections preceding the 2026 general elections. Furthermore, he revealed that following the update exercise, “the register will be printed and presented to the public for scrutiny before being sent back to the national level.”

During the meeting, Honorable Amelia Kyambadde praised the efforts of the Special Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs, SPA Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, and the head office of the national chairman for their initiatives aimed at empowering the next generation, known as “Bazzukulu Ba Museveni,” with self-empowerment equipment.

She emphasized that such efforts would contribute to job creation and reduce youth involvement in criminal activities. Hon. Kyambadde urged SPA Hajjat Namyalo to visit Greater Mpigi to extend empowerment initiatives to more youth in the area.

Drawing parallels with emerging economies like China and India, she highlighted the significance of investing in quality programs and youth mentorship schemes to transform young people into job creators rather than job seekers.

Taking advantage of the gathering, Hon. Kyambadde urged the youth and all citizens to participate actively in the registration exercise by visiting their respective villages in large numbers to register and update their details ahead of the 2026 elections. She stressed the importance of ensuring accurate registration aligned with the records of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).

Encouraging everyone to utilize the five-day registration period to crosscheck their details in the NRM membership register, she emphasized that the register was for party faithful aged 16 and above, not a voter’s register.

Hon. Kyambadde called for collective responsibility, with everyone playing a vigilant role in the registration process.

“I urge everyone to utilize these five days to crosscheck their details in the NRM membership register,” she urged. “Remember, this is not a voter’s register but a register for party faithful aged 16 and above. Let’s approach this as a collective responsibility, with everyone playing a vigilant role.”

The registration exercise is set to continue until Sunday, March 17, 2024.
