Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has recalled parliament from recess amidst public scrutiny of parliament’s excessive expenditure in the ongoing Uganda parliament exhibition.
According to a document released by the clerk to parliament, Adolf Mwesigwa, to members of parliament, the House will resume plenary sittings on Friday, March 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. following its adjournment by the speaker on March 5, 2024.
Matters to be discussed as parliament resumes remain subject to debate. However, a section of the public has been demanding a plenary sitting to hear legislators discuss the high corruption levels in the legislative house.
Following the exposure of the ‘good service award’ that was awarded to former leader of opposition (LOP) Mathias Mpuuga and other backbench commissioners, parliament has been castigated for unnecessary spending.
Mpuuga is said to have received a service award of UGX500 million, while other backbench commissioners allegedly received UGX400 million each, and such figures have raised the eyebrows of many Ugandans.
Joel Ssenyonyi, the current leader of the opposition, demanded speaker Anita Among earlier this week to recall parliament from recess so that the house could discuss the exorbitant spending done by parliament.
Ssenyonyi also tasked Among to call for a parliamentary commission meeting, where he sits as a member, so that he is given an explanation of how the commission reached a consensus to award his immediate predecessor and other commissioners.
As the house returns from recess on Friday, many Ugandans are eagerly waiting to see if the exorbitant spending of parliament will be part of the agenda.
