In a bizarre turn of events, a Harare woman was arrested after attempting to swindle her former lover out of a hefty sum of US$2300 by faking a pregnancy and childbirth.

The story unfolds like a dramatic script, with twists and turns that leave one questioning the lengths people will go to for money.

The Elaborate Scheme

Sally, as she is only known, concocted an elaborate scheme to deceive her ex-lover, claiming she was pregnant and had given birth and needed US$2300 to cover the associated costs.

She even went as far as sharing photos of a baby to lend credibility to her story.

To add pressure, she threatened to have him fired from his job, boasting of her connections to an unnamed “Honourable” Member of Parliament.

Detective Kedha to the Rescue

Enter Tafadzwa “Detective Kedha” Chidawa, a former police officer turned social media detective, whom the distraught lover contracted to unravel the truth.

Posing as the lover’s nephew, Detective Kedha initiated a sting operation that led to the capture of the driver supposed to collect the extortion money.

The driver quickly implicated Sally and led the detective to her location.

The Truth Unravels

Upon questioning, she initially insisted she was on her way to the clinic and defiantly said that we wanted to call her lawyer.

But she later claimed she had suffered a miscarriage, contradicting her earlier assertion that the baby had been born.

The video documenting the investigation ends with Sally at the police station, awaiting processing.

The Cost of Deception

This incident not only highlights the lengths to which individuals will go for financial gain but also serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of deception.

For Zimbabweans, both at home and abroad, this story is a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to verify claims, especially when they involve significant financial transactions.

As the case of Sally and her elaborate extortion scheme unfolds, one can’t help but wonder about the moral compass of individuals who resort to such deceit.
