A prompt response by authorities in Amudat district averted a potentially grave situation as 26 pupils from Kalas Girls’ Primary School were hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning.

Reports indicate that on March 6th, around 11:00 pm, several pupils began experiencing stomachaches, throat irritation, and heart pains after consuming cookies discovered wrapped in polythene paper within one of the classrooms.

Michael Longole, the spokesperson for Mt. Moroto Regional Police, stated that upon receiving distressing information from the school’s head teacher, law enforcement promptly arrived at the scene and the affected pupils were swiftly evacuated to Amudat Hospital for urgent medical attention.

As of now, 22 pupils have been discharged from the hospital, indicating positive progress in their recovery. Meanwhile, four others remain under close monitoring by the medical team.

Longole emphasized the initiation of a comprehensive inquiry to gather additional details surrounding the incident. He urged any individuals possessing pertinent information to come forward and assist the detectives in their investigations.

It’s worth noting that Kalas Girls’ School also serves as a refuge for girls seeking to escape child marriages and female genital mutilation within Amudat district, underscoring its critical role in promoting girls’ welfare and empowerment.
