The rural village of Bukomolo in the Bukedi North region was engulfed in grief upon hearing about a tragic suicide that shook the entire community.

Naisiga Kolovina, a 20-year-old student at Budini SS in Kaliro district, was discovered lifeless in her room under puzzling circumstances on the evening of March 1, 2024.

According to statements provided by authorities, Naisiga’s younger brother, Bulabale, was sent to summon her for supper after she failed to respond to her mother’s call.

In a chilling discovery, Bulabale peered through the window and witnessed a heart-wrenching scene – his sister hanging from a rope. He immediately alerted their mother, who raised the alarm, prompting other villagers to rush to the scene.

The Kerekeren Police Post, in coordination with the Budaka Police Station, swiftly responded to the distress call. Upon their arrival, the lifeless body of Naisiga Kolovina was carefully removed from the room.

The police meticulously documented the crime scene and recorded statements from witnesses, including Bulabale Tom, a 65-year-old resident of Bukomolo village.

“While the exact cause of the hanging remains unknown, Naisiga’s parents suspect that their daughter may have been pregnant and feared sharing the news with them. We have launched a thorough investigation, with inquiries currently underway to ascertain the circumstances leading up to Naisiga’s tragic decisions,” said Bukedi North Region Police Spokesperson SP Semewo Samuel.

“We are committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind this devastating incident,” he added.

The body of Naisiga was transported to the morgue, where a postmortem examination was to be conducted to shed light on the cause of death.

The local community, reeling from the shock of the tragedy, has come together to support the Kolovina family and has initiated discussions about mental health awareness and the importance of open dialogue surrounding sensitive issues.

As the investigation unfolds, the people of Bukomolo village and the surrounding areas are now soaked in grief, grappling with questions that may never be fully answered.

The untimely death of Naisiga Kolovina serves as a sombre reminder of the urgent need for mental health support and the creation of safe spaces for individuals to seek help in times of distress.
