While at the home of the late Cecilia Ogwal at the vigil on Saturday night, FDC party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat made two demands to government and the family of the fallen politician.
Amuriat requested that the body of the late be taken to FDC’s Najjanankumbi offices so that members pay tribute. He also requested that her casket be wrapped in the FDC colors.
The Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua, who was the most senior official at the residence of the deceased in Bugolobi, Kampala, appealed to the FDC to borrow a wisdom from the Bible in which Jesus once asked a lawyer to refer to the law.
“Having died as a serving MP, Hon. Cecilia is entitled to an official burial. Additionally, H.E. Museveni in exercise of his presidential prerogative directed further that the body lies in state and she be accorded gun salute in recognition of her enormous contribution to our motherland,” said Obua.
Obua emphasized that it is the national flag used to wrap the caskets in official burials.
“In an official burial, the caskets carrying the remains of the departed is wrapped in the Ugandan national flag. That is the law, the legislative practice and the indisputable precedence,” he emphasized.
It should be remembered that the bodies of the late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah , who died as a serving Speaker of Parliament and Col. Okello Engola were neither taken to NRM headquarters nor wrapped in the NRM colors.
