Ugandan authorities have hailed China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for renovating two dilapidated roads in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, free of charge and getting them ready for service ahead of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the G77+China summits next week.

Maurice Kairania, deputy director of Roads and Drainages at Kampala Capital City Authority, which is responsible for city operations, told Xinhua over the telephone Friday that the initiative by CCCC had come in timely, especially at the time when the country was strapped for cash to repair roads.

“We just told them to work with our engineers and the roads are now very smooth,” Kairania said.

He said no other company had sacrificed resources to rehabilitate such crucial roads as CCCC had done.

Xiong Pailiang, the project manager at CCCC, said the company had put fresh tarmac layers and repaired potholes on both Malcolm X Avenue and Prince Charles Drive in Kololo, an upscale residential and commercial neighborhood in Kampala.

“CCCC is a member of the local community. We are proud to have offered support in carrying out emergency repairs on a number of roads and bridges. We have been doing all kinds of corporate social responsibility work in Uganda for many years,” he said. “It is our responsibility to give back to the community and support the development and improvement of the local community. This exemplifies our profound commitment to the betterment of Ugandan society.”

At least 1,500 delegates and more than 50 heads of state from 134 countries are expected to attend the Jan. 15-20 NAM summit and the Jan. 21-22 G77+China summit, according to organizers
