Police have confirmed the death of Pastor Aloysious Bugingo’s bodyguard in Tuesday night’s shooting incident in Namungoona, a Kampala suburb.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire identified the deceased as Richard Muhumuza.

“The Old Kampala Police are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into a tragic incident involving the attempted murder of Pastor Alloysious Bugingo from the House of Prayer Ministry and the unfortunate killing of his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard,” said Owoyesigyire in a statement on Wednesday morning.

“At approximately 9:00 PM on January 2, 2024, unidentified assailants opened fire on Pastor Bugingo’s vehicle, registered as PRAIZ GOD, along Namungoona, Zone 2, Kasubi, Rubaga Division, Kampala at Bwalakata Junction along National Housing Road, before swiftly escaping the scene on a motorcycle,” he added.

Owoyesigyire said despite sustaining injuries during the attack, Pastor Bugingo managed to transport the vehicle to Mulago Hospital.

“Regrettably, his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard, succumbed to the assault and was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital,” said Owoyesigyire.

Hospitalised

“Currently, Pastor Bugingo is undergoing medical treatment and is under close monitoring.”

ChimpReports understands Bugingo is in a stable condition. Medics disclosed that the man of God was out of danger.

Police last night cordoned off the scene to facilitate investigations into the incident.

High-profile government officials and Muslim clerics have previously been attacked by gunmen in different parts of the country.

Bugingo is a strong supporter of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) leader and President, Yoweri Museveni.

The Director of Salt Media Group of Companies regularly uses his pulpit to criticise the opposition while at the same time rallying support for Museveni and presidential hopeful Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Owoyesigyire said upon an immediate response to the incident, the police discovered that the scene had been tampered with.

“Statements from eyewitnesses have been diligently recorded, and the deceased’s body has been conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a thorough postmortem examination,” he observed.

“In our active pursuit of justice, we are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage to identify the assailants. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.”
