Mohamed Salah’s Boot Change Spurs Double in Liverpool’s Victory over Newcastle

Mohamed Salah’s tactical boot swap during halftime proved decisive as Liverpool secured a 4-2 win against Newcastle, claiming a three-point lead at the Premier League summit.

In his final appearance before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Egypt, Salah encountered a setback when his first-half penalty was saved by Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka.

An electrifying second half at Anfield saw all six goals unfold, with Salah kickstarting the scoring onslaught with a routine tap-in, marking his 150th Premier League goal for the Reds.

Playing a pivotal role, Salah assisted Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo, guiding Jurgen Klopp’s side to a comfortable victory. He sealed the triumph with another successful penalty, securing the points just four minutes before the final whistle.

Explaining his halftime boot switch, Salah clarified, “The boots I missed the penalty with, I trained in them just yesterday. It’s not superstition because I wear various boots, but if I feel it might affect my mindset, I switch, to keep my mind calm and focused on the game.”

The Egyptian forward also admitted that the prospect of departing for AFCON without a goal spurred him on in the second half.

Despite Liverpool’s record of 7.53 expected goals during the game, Salah and his teammates squandered numerous opportunities, delaying the victory until late in the match.

“At halftime, the players discussed staying composed, continuing our style of play. We wasted several opportunities, including my penalty. I thought, ‘Leaving for the national team with this performance?'” revealed Salah.

He emphasized the need to refocus and make an impact, a feat he successfully accomplished.

With the possibility of missing Liverpool’s next four Premier League games contingent on Egypt’s AFCON progress, including a crucial clash against Arsenal, Salah expressed confidence in his teammates’ ability to uphold the title chase during his absence.

“Even without me, I trust the team to secure wins. We have exceptional players, immense quality. Anyone can fill my role and contribute similarly. The key is feeling free from pressure to showcase their abilities.”

Salah’s halftime adaptation not only spurred his personal success but also contributed significantly to Liverpool’s commanding victory, leaving them in a strong position atop the Premier League table.
