Tanzanian Firm Taifa Gas Undertakes Massive LPG Storage Facility Construction in Kenya

Taifa Gas SEZ Kenya Ltd., a Tanzanian firm, has initiated the construction of an expansive liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facility in Mombasa, Kenya. The colossal 30,000-ton storage project, situated strategically within the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone, aims not only to bridge a significant gap in Kenya’s gas sector but also to stimulate job creation and enhance regional economic activity.

Veneranda Masoum, the Managing Director of Taifa Gas, emphasized the project’s significance as a substantial investment that extends the company’s operations beyond Tanzania and into the broader East African community. She highlighted the estimated creation of 90,000 direct and indirect jobs upon completion, illustrating the company’s commitment to propelling regional development and livelihoods.

Despite initial hurdles such as approval delays and land acquisition challenges in Kenya, Taifa Gas, renowned for its LPG operations across multiple African countries, remained steadfast in its endeavor to establish a foothold in the Kenyan market.

William Ruto, the managing director of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), applauded Taifa Gas’ venture into Dongo Kundu, citing the project as a testament to the zone’s increasing allure for investors. He commended the company’s innovative approach, particularly the visionary underwater pipeline initiative linking the port facility to their storage, showing full support for this forward-thinking move.

Ruto also highlighted the broader developmental strides underway at Dongo Kundu, accentuating the ongoing substantial investments by the Japanese government in port infrastructure and indicating the SEZ’s transformation into a hub for industrial growth and international trade.

Moreover, he noted the interest expressed by several other companies seeking to establish operations at Dongo Kundu, a reflection of the zone’s burgeoning appeal. This surge in investment holds the promise of fostering a dynamic economic landscape and delivering substantial benefits to Kenya and the broader East African region.

While acknowledging the postponement of service leasing tenders at the port, Ruto emphasized KPA’s dedication to advancing sustainable practices. He outlined collaborative efforts with shipping lines for horticultural exports and collaborations with international entities to reduce carbon emissions, affirming a commitment to responsible growth and environmental stewardship.

In essence, Taifa Gas’ entrance into the Kenyan market through the Dongo Kundu LPG storage initiative signals a mutually beneficial collaboration between Tanzania and Kenya. Addressing crucial energy needs, driving employment opportunities, and bolstering regional economic progress, this bold venture sets the stage for a promising future across East Africa.
