Sheikh Tamusuza Ssemambo has rejected a suspension from the office of deputy mufti that was issued following a petition of impeachment against him.

Dr Lubega Kisambira, writing in the capacity of chairperson of the Uganda Moslem Supreme Council, a position from which he was sacked, told Sheikh Ssemambo Friday, December 22, 2023, to vacate the office of deputy Mufti and return all official items belonging to UMSC.

Kisambira said he had received a petition of impeachment against Sheikh Ssemambo, in which the petitioners faulted him for ‘conducting himself in a manner unbefitting’ of his office and abrogating the constitution of UMSC. He further told Ssemambo to file a response within seven working days.

In his response to the suspension dated December 24th, 2023, Sheikh Ssemambo says Kisambira has no capacity nor authority to receive any petition against him because he ceased being the council’s chairperson.

Kisambira was sacked as UMSC’s Chairperson at a General Assembly held on December 17, 2023. The same assembly appointed Ssemambo as the acting Mufti and Hassan Gule as the acting chairperson of the council.

Sheikh Ssemambo says Kisambira’s actions are illegal and amount to impersonation and contempt of court order, adding that Kisambira’s attempt to act as chairman UMSC is contrary to the law and undermines the supremacy of the general assembly.

“…any further attempt to continue transacting any business in the capacity of national chairman of the UMSC is contrary to the law and the constitution of UMSC and as well undermining the supremacy of the general assembly,” writes Sheikh Ssemambo.

Sheik Ssemambo has cautioned the public against conducting business with Kisambira and called for a halt of all UMSC-business until further notice. He has also warned Kisambira to stop the ‘illegal’ impeachment against him, or else he will take legal action against him.
