Uganda’s national cricket team has etched its name into the annals of cricketing history by securing a historic qualification for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, following a resounding nine-wicket victory over Rwanda. This triumph marks a significant milestone for the team and the enthusiastic cricketing community that fervently supported them.

The journey to this historic achievement culminated in an emphatic performance against Rwanda, sealing their spot in the prestigious tournament alongside South Africa and Namibia. The T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States and West Indies next June, will witness Uganda representing Africa with pride.

In a compelling showdown at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Namibia, the Brian Masaba-captained Cricket Cranes displayed exceptional prowess after winning the toss and opting to bowl first. The Rwandan team, led by Clinton Rubagumya, faced a formidable bowling attack that led to their eventual dismissal.

Key figures in Uganda’s dominant display included Alpesh Ramjani, Henry Ssenyondo, and captain Brian Masaba, who excelled as the top bowlers. Ramjani emerged as the most impactful bowler, conceding a mere one run from three overs bowled, showcasing an impressive economy rate of 0.33.

The chase of 65 runs for Uganda became a straightforward task, reflecting the team’s exceptional performance and ease in confirming their place in the forthcoming World Cup.

Uganda’s qualification marks a significant milestone, elevating them to the status of the fifth African nation to feature in an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Their victory against Rwanda secured their fifth win out of six games played during the African qualifiers in Namibia, solidifying their position as one of the top two teams in the qualifiers, trailing hosts Namibia.

The Cricket Cranes commenced their qualification campaign with an eight-wicket triumph over Tanzania, followed by a setback against the hosts in a six-wicket defeat. Overcoming the challenge posed by a formidable Zimbabwe team, they emerged victorious by five wickets before confidently defeating Nigeria in their subsequent match.

The decisive 33-run victory against neighboring Kenya hinted at their imminent success, culminating in a comfortable triumph over Rwanda that confirmed their place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, marking a momentous achievement for Ugandan cricket.
