Abdul Rashid Kyoto, a 31-year-old suspected commander of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militant group, faced an extension of his remand until December 19 by the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Known as Njovu or Tembo, he stands accused of murder and terrorism offenses, pending ongoing investigations.

Chief Magistrate Elias Kakooza presided over the court session, where the prosecution, led by Mariam Kuluthum, sought an adjournment due to the ongoing police inquiries. Kuluthum emphasized the need for the investigations’ completion before the suspect could be brought to trial in the High Court.

The charges against Kyoto stem from an incident on October 17 in Kasese District’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. Allegedly, Kyoto and others engaged in violent acts without concern for public safety or property, resulting in the tragic deaths of honeymooners David Barlow James, Geyer Emmarentia Cecilia, and their Ugandan tour guide Eric Alyai.

The state’s allegations extend to property damage between October 13 and 17 in various locations, including Rusese-Katwe and Nyamunuka, involving the burning of a cargo truck and a tourist car.

Moreover, Kyoto and his associates face accusations of robbery, including the seizure of passports belonging to citizens of the United Kingdom and South Africa. The prosecution claims firearms were used in the killing of Barlow, accompanied by the theft of money, bank cards, identification documents, and other personal belongings.

According to the charge sheet, Kyoto is alleged to have been associated with the ADF, recognized as a terrorist organization, from 2018 until November 1, 2023, spanning locations in Uganda and neighboring DR Congo.

Kyoto’s extended remand underscores the seriousness of the charges and the ongoing investigations into the reported incidents linked to the ADF militant group.

The court’s decision highlights the gravity of the situation and the continued efforts to bring clarity to the alleged criminal activities attributed to Kyoto and his purported involvement with the ADF.
