President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appealed to the Chinese government to expand access to its market for finished goods, emphasizing the importance of trade in processed products to foster economic growth. The President made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the National People’s Congress of China, headed by Deputy Chairman Luosang Jiangcun, held at State House Entebbe on Wednesday, November 22.

Expressing the significance of China’s market support for Uganda’s prosperity, President Museveni highlighted the need for increased trade in finished goods between China and Africa. He underscored that exporting raw materials often results in reduced earnings and job losses for African countries, citing the impediment to economic growth.

“China’s market openness to finished products is crucial for Africa’s economic development,” emphasized President Museveni. He commended China’s historical support for Africa’s progress since 1949, acknowledging the nation’s contributions to various development projects in Uganda.

Acknowledging the long-standing partnership between China and Uganda, the President noted collaborative efforts on significant infrastructure projects, including hydro dams, expressways, and technological advancements like the internet backbone supported by Huawei.

President Museveni also expressed gratitude for China’s backing in advocating for Africa’s representation in the UN Security Council. He appreciated President Xi Jinping’s delegation attendance at the forthcoming Non-Aligned Movement and G-77+China Third South Summits in Kampala.

Deputy Chairman Luosang Jiangcun conveyed President Xi Jinping’s regards and praised President Museveni’s commitment to promoting peace and development in Africa. He commended Uganda’s independent development approach and affirmed China’s continued support for Uganda’s socio-economic progress.

Highlighting China’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations, Jiangcun assured continued support for Uganda’s socio-economic development agenda. While expressing regret at President Xi’s inability to attend the upcoming summits in person, Jiangcun confirmed the dispatch of a high-level delegation to represent China’s interests.

The meeting, attended by high-ranking Ugandan officials including the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, Government Chief Whip Denis Obua, and Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze, emphasized the mutual commitment between Uganda and China to foster diplomatic relations and collaborative growth initiatives.

This meeting signifies a continued effort to strengthen the bond between Uganda and China, focusing on economic cooperation and mutual developmental initiatives.
