A shooting incident at Kireka Barracks in Wakiso district on Monday resulted in the tragic death of an unidentified male adult, prompting investigations by the police into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
The deceased lost his life during a demonstration within the Kireka Barracks area, involving local residents. At the time of the incident, the reason behind the demonstration remained unclear, heightening tensions in the precincts.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the demonstrators reportedly engaged in various unlawful activities, including road blockades, the burning of car tires, and confrontations with law enforcement officers. In the heat of the moment, as officers attempted to disperse the crowd, rioters allegedly threw stones at the police.
Tragically, amidst this chaos, an unidentified male adult fell victim to a stray bullet, resulting in his untimely death. His body was transported to City Mortuary Mulago as investigations were immediately launched by the Kampala Metropolitan East and Jinja Road Police units to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the demonstration and the fatal shooting.
The police, urging the local community to maintain calm during the ongoing investigations, revealed plans for a collaborative meeting involving local leaders and a team led by the Commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police on November 14, 2023. The aim is to collectively deliberate on the incident and determine a constructive way forward.
