Dorothy Kisaka, the executive director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has announced a comprehensive program targeting the relocation of unapproved roadside businesses along key city roads in preparation for the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77+ China summits scheduled for next year.
The KCCA aims to decongest and beautify the city ahead of these significant international events, citing security concerns for visiting dignitaries. Alongside efforts to clear ungazetted roadside businesses, road improvement initiatives have commenced on several vital routes, including Mukwano, Nasser, Salama, Mobutu, UCB Rise, and Tank Hill roads, covering a total length of approximately 15 kilometers across 10 identified roads essential for facilitating the summits.
Acknowledging the inconveniences posed by ongoing works, Kisaka urged residents to cooperate and remain patient during this period of infrastructure enhancement.
During a media briefing held at Kampala Serena Hotel, Kisaka emphasized the importance of Kampala’s residents participating in the city’s beautification process. Highlighting the cultural significance of cleanliness during guest receptions, she encouraged residents to take individual responsibility by painting and decluttering their properties, fostering a welcoming environment for visitors.
The upcoming NAM summit, slated for 15th to 20th January at Speke Resort Hotel, Munyonyo, and the G77 summit (Third South Summit) from 21st to 23rd January, will center on themes of “Deepening cooperation for shared global affluence” and “Leaving no one behind,” respectively.
In addition to addressing infrastructure and business relocations, KCCA is rolling out measures to manage solid waste by introducing designated dustbins across the city, aiming to discourage the improper disposal of rubbish in unauthorized spaces.
Expressing gratitude for the government’s financial support towards the KCCA’s annual budget, Kisaka emphasized the allocation of resources to fulfill their responsibilities in preparing the city for the upcoming summits. The initiatives undertaken by KCCA underscore their commitment to ensure a clean, organized, and hospitable environment for the esteemed international guests expected to attend these crucial gatherings in Kampala.
