On Friday afternoon, Allen Kagina, the Executive Director of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), led a team of engineers on a fact-finding mission to assess the damage caused by the River Kafu on the Hoima-Kampala Road at Kikonda in Kyankwanzi district. Kagina and her team appealed to motorists not to use the road hastily until the situation calms down.

The engineers from UNRA are working to find both temporary and long-term solutions to address the damages. Kagina mentioned that they need the floods to subside completely before assessing the extent of the damage and determining when the road can be reopened to traffic. She urged the public to remain calm during this period.

Engineer Ireen Kabazira, in charge of the Busunju-Kiboga-Hoima Road project, stated that they plan to fix all the box culverts along the road that have been damaged. The UNRA drainage engineer proposed increasing the size of the box culverts to accommodate the water volume, and work is already underway with the contractor on site.

Pelusi Kabale, the deputy Resident District Commissioner for Kyankwanzi, urged the public to adhere to security guidelines and avoid using the road. He emphasized using designated roads to access Hoima and advised against risking the safety of children crossing the road.

This development comes after the River Kafu burst its banks earlier in the week, causing flooding on various sections of the Kampala-Hoima Road and disrupting movement on the Masindi-Kimengo route due to the floods.
