Oil marketing companies (OMCs), represented by the Sustainable Energies and Petroleum Association (SEPA), are advocating for amendments to the Petroleum Supply Act in Uganda.

SEPA supports the proposed amendment designating the Uganda National Oil Company (Unoc) as the sole importer of petroleum products but emphasizes the need for flexibility.

SEPA proposes that OMCs should be allowed to import and supply special petroleum products, especially in cases where Unoc is unable to meet demand or import specific grades.

While the proposed amendment outlines the products Unoc will import, SEPA underscores the importance of considering the changing grading of petroleum products and potential challenges that may arise with Unoc as the sole licensed supplier.

This request for flexibility aims to ensure a reliable and diverse supply of petroleum products, addressing potential gaps or challenges that may arise in the market.

The ongoing discussions reflect the industry’s efforts to strike a balance between a designated sole importer and the need for adaptability in response to market dynamics.
