Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni expressed his condolences for the passing of Maitland Lawrence Rukaari, an esteemed farmer and businessman in the Ankole sub-region. Mr. Rukaari, who passed away at the age of 89 due to diabetes, is the father of Mbarara North MP Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari.
President Museveni, represented by Minister of State for Animal Industry and Isingiro North MP, Bright Rwamirama, conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family during the burial ceremony in Nkokonjeru ward in Mbarara City. The President acknowledged the family’s contributions to the struggle for liberation and praised Maitland Rukaari’s efforts in the development of present-day Mbarara. As a gesture of support, President Museveni contributed 10 million Ugandan shillings (UGX) towards the funeral expenses.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, the Justice Minister, and Democratic Party President Norbert Mao, and Richard Todwong, the Secretary-General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, also paid tribute to the late Maitland Rukaari for his contributions to the nation and his role in raising and educating future leaders.
Maitland Rukaari is survived by seven children from his first wife, Evas, who passed away in 2002. He married Jane Rukaari in 2004 and leaves behind a legacy of accomplishment and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His passing marks the end of an era for a man who played a significant role in the life of his family and community.
