The Supreme Court has made a decision to reject the bail application submitted by Lieutenant Ambrose Ogwang, who was convicted of the killing of Inspector of Police George William Koire. Ogwang had previously received a 29-year prison sentence for this crime, handed down by the High Court in Mbale in 2019. Lieutenant Ogwang’s bail application was grounded in his need for medical treatment for peptic ulcers, but the plea was ultimately denied by Justice Christopher Madrama.
Justice Madrama clarified that the bail application did not satisfy the requisite conditions stipulated under the Trial and Indictment Act and Constitutional Bail Guidelines for Courts, thus leading to its rejection. The court’s decision reflects the stringent criteria that must be met when considering bail applications for individuals convicted of serious crimes.
The case revolved around Lieutenant Ogwang’s involvement in the murder of Inspector Koire, a tragic incident that occurred in Mbale Town in 2010. Following a series of appeals, the conviction ultimately reached its final verdict, leading to Ogwang’s incarceration.
