Hajj Muhammed Kamulegeya, the headteacher of Kitebi Secondary School, has called upon stakeholders to support his proposal to rename the school, stating that it was given the wrong name. Kitebi Secondary School, established in 1984, is located on land provided by the Kingdom of Buganda, and Kamulegeya believes that renaming the school to “Kings College of Kitebi” would better reflect its historical and cultural context.

During a ceremony to celebrate the successful completion of a six-day training program for student patriots, conducted by senior national patriots under the guidance of the National Secretariat for Patriotic Corps, Kamulegeya expressed his conviction that the school’s current name does not align with its background. He stated, “The school was given a wrong name. I am in charge of this matter, and we shall rename the school to Kings College of Kitebi.”

The training program involved 2,471 young patriots and 81 young patriotic guards from eleven secondary schools. Kamulegeya emphasized the importance of comprehensive education, including the practice of patriotism, and announced the establishment of a patriotism coordination office in Rubaga. This office will provide essential resources such as computers, free internet access, and regional offices at the school premises to support the efforts of young patriots.

As part of the event’s theme focused on transforming the mindset of youths socially and economically, students at Kitebi Secondary School demonstrated their creativity and innovation by designing a proposed national patriotism flag. The Representative Patriotism Patron, Xavier Bamuturaki, appealed to stakeholders to consider modifying the national patriotism flag, as showcased by the young patriots, to create an official flag for patriots in Uganda.

The students at Kitebi Secondary School have also embraced the value of charity as an essential component of patriotism. They collected over Shs2 million, which was used for community outreach initiatives, including a drive to the ‘Bakateyamba Home’ in Rubaga Division. Additionally, the students engaged in community service activities at Rubaga Hospital, cleaned three local markets, and donated blood, earning recognition and appreciation from the community.

While the school has made significant strides in promoting patriotism and community engagement, challenges remain. Xavier Bamuturaki highlighted the need for instructional materials and updated uniforms, as the last uniform supply was received in 2016 and has since aged.

Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Kampala, Amina Lukanga Nanziri, commended the young patriots and encouraged them to remain resilient in their pursuit of patriotism. She emphasized that these young patriots are the future of Uganda and have a vital role to play in taking the country to greater heights.

As a model school for the promotion of patriotism and the activities associated with it, Kitebi Secondary School has received the support and encouragement of stakeholders to continue fostering discipline and the values learned from the training program.
