The Mountain Division Court Martial sitting at the division headquarters in Muhoti – Fort Portal City has sentenced Corp. Avugo Lomuro Peter a UPDF soldier to life imprisonment for killing two of his colleagues.
The court chairperson Benon Besigye delivered the judgement after finding the accused guilty of shooting and killing his two colleagues and attempting to kill another one at Muhoti barracks.
While sentencing Corp. Avugo Lomuro Peter a UPDF soldier to life imprisonment, the Mountain Division Court Martial observed that the corporal committed a heinous crime when he opened fire at his colleagues when he was supposed to protect them.
The court chairperson also took into consideration the three months he has been on remand and the fact that he has children to take care of.
Court documents indicate that Avugo committed the crime on 14 July this year before he went into hiding where he was arrested the following day near the barracks.
Speaking to the media, the Court Martial Chairperson said they were still investigating what prompted Corp. Avugo, a senior soldier, to kill his colleagues yesterday.
Monica Kansiime, one of the soldiers that was shot at by Avugo five times says she was at her workstation when the incident happened.
The prosecution had earlier asked the court to give the maximum punishment to the officer as a deterrent measure to prevent other officers from doing the same.
