A joint security pacifying the city off any dirt to peace has arrested Joel Ssenyonyi, the National Unity Platform-NUP party, spokesperson, Lewis Rubongoya, the secretary general and former Kampala central NUP parliamentary candidate, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu.

The NUP leaders along with several others were rounded up at Rubis fuel station in Kamwokya and driven off to Kira Road Police station.

In an admin post on X through Ssenyonyi’s account, it is claimed that the pair was “violently arrested and taken in a drone.”

“Several other people have been arrested, simply because NUP organized prayers for victims of brutality,” adds the post.

The arrest followed a long standoff between the party leaders, a handful of NUP members, journalists, and security personnel.

The Police and Military deployed in large numbers around Kamwokya to block a planned parallel Independence Day address that the party president and fellow leaders planned to hold at their offices.

After sealing off the party offices, the Police and the army intercepted Rubongoya and his team at the fuel station and ordered them to leave the area.

Efforts to reason with the heavily armed security officials were futile.

In the end, the leaders were forcefully grabbed and bundled into a waiting grey “drone” van and whisked off.

Moments later, NUP President Bobi Wine communicated through his X page that the officials were being detained at Kira Road Police Station

Uganda today marks 61 years since independence, with the main celebrations in Kitgum under the theme “Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation: Taking Charge of Our Future as a Free Nation.”

Foreign delegates are expected to attend the ceremony.

The Vice President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Prosper Bazombanza, as well as His Excellency Sheikh Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have arrived in Uganda to attend the 61st Independence Day celebrations.
