A severe hailstorm has left more than 200 households in Mogodes Town Council, Tororo District, Uganda, in distress as it wreaked havoc on their crops and properties. The hailstorm, which persisted for approximately two hours, caused extensive damage to various crops, including beans, banana plantations, maize, soya beans, and potatoes. Tragically, many of these crops were on the verge of being harvested, raising concerns about potential food shortages and the livelihoods of the affected residents. Some homes also had their roofs torn off during the storm, rendering families homeless and in dire need of assistance.

Yafesi Okiror, the LC1 chairperson for Orago ‘B’ cell, reported the devastating impact of the hailstorm, expressing concerns about the looming food crisis and economic hardships that may follow.Berita Auyat, a 72-year-old resident whose sole house lost its roof, shared her distress, highlighting the challenges she faces in the aftermath of the disaster. She appealed for support from the government and charitable individuals to help her rebuild her life.Timothy Emelait, the Gombolola Security Officer for Magodes Town Council, highlighted that many affected families are now seeking shelter in churches after being left homeless. He emphasized the urgent need for assistance to help the affected residents recover from their losses.Arthur Nyapidi, the vice chairperson of Magodes Town Council, is collaborating with village leaders to assess the full extent of the damage. This assessment will be crucial in seeking support from district authorities, particularly for food relief efforts. Nyapidi expressed his concerns about the potential food shortages that may result from this disaster, especially since the affected communities were already struggling with poor harvests in the previous season. While there have been no reported fatalities as a result of the hailstorm, the affected residents urgently require support in the form of materials like iron sheets, food, and planting materials to help them rebuild their lives and restore hope in their communities. This disaster comes amid earlier warnings in mid-2023 that certain regions of Uganda could face devastating rains and adverse weather conditions.
