Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has made significant changes by removing headlines from news articles shared by users. Instead of displaying a headline along with a picture, news links now appear only as pictures with a small watermark. This move has raised concerns about distinguishing between news and other types of information on the platform and may impact its trustworthiness.

Elon Musk, who took over Twitter and renamed it X, has been critical of traditional media and claims that X is a superior source of information. The recent changes, according to Musk, were made for “aesthetic” reasons.

Musk’s leadership of X has been marked by controversy, including allowing banned conspiracy theorists and extremists back on the platform, leading to advertiser withdrawals. He has also banned and reinstated various journalists from mainstream outlets and has been accused of delaying posts from certain accounts.

The relationship between media and tech companies has faced challenges beyond X, with Google and Meta (formerly Facebook) opposing laws that require them to pay media companies for displaying news stories. Additionally, the European Commission has criticized X for having a higher ratio of misinformation and disinformation compared to other social media platforms.

These changes in the presentation of news on X are seen as the latest development in the evolving dynamics between social media platforms, media organizations, and the public’s access to information.
