Woman Detained For Dumping Baby In Pit Latrine

West Nile: Police in Zombo District have in their custody a woman in her 20s who gave birth to a baby girl and allegedly dumped it in the neighbour’s pit latrine.

The suspect identified as Brenda Nyamutoro is a resident of Mawa Cell, Omua Ward, Paidha Town Council, Zombo District.

It is alleged that the accused mother who was picked up by police on Tuesday delivered five days ago after she induced labour and later dumped the baby in the neighbour’s pit latrine.

Geoffrey Aliana Oryem, the Mawa Cell LC Chairman, confirmed that the Police Fire Brigade Rescue team arrived at the crime scene around 05:00 pm, retrieved the deceased body and took it to Paidha Health Center III mortuary for autopsy.

“When locals raised concerns about that lady, we invited her for a small briefing. When we asked about the whereabouts of the pregnancy, the lady shockingly said the baby fell in a pit latrine by mistake last Friday when she had gone for a long call. Her statement did not add up and we took her to the police. Officers later came and we retrieved the lifeless baby,” Oryem explained.

Joyce Kayeny the woman councillor of Omua Ward strongly condemned the act before advising youth in the area about making proper marriage choices in life.

Burial has been delayed after Police discovered a clothing strip tightly tied around the neck of the retrieved lifeless baby.

By press time Police couldn’t divulge more detail about the sad incident that came days after another woman was arrested for reportedly procuring abortion in Paidha Town Council.
