The British government is facing embarrassment following an undercover recording of Rwanda’s high commissioner in London criticizing the UK’s historical human rights record and disagreeing with the country’s interior minister on migration issues.

The UK had planned to send asylum-seekers and refugees to Rwanda, but this plan has faced widespread criticism from human rights groups and is currently stalled due to a legal challenge in UK courts.

Rwanda’s high commissioner, Yamina Karitanyi, expressed strong opposition to the UK’s stance on migration, particularly the views of Interior Minister Suella Braverman, who has questioned the relevance of the United Nations Refugee Convention.

In the covert recording, Karitanyi suggested that the UK should focus on providing alternatives for people so they do not have to risk their lives to reach the country. She criticized the perception of the UK as a refuge for migrants, highlighting the country’s historical role in slavery and imperialism.

Despite the UK’s claims that Rwanda is a safe destination for asylum-seekers and refugees, Karitanyi appeared dismissive of concerns about human rights abuses in Rwanda, including incidents involving the killing of refugees by the police.

The Rwandan government responded to the undercover recording, stating that there were factual inaccuracies in the film and emphasizing Rwanda’s commitment to treating every person equally and providing sanctuary and opportunity.

The British government defended its partnership with Rwanda in addressing migration issues and stated its commitment to finding innovative solutions to combat people smuggling.

The legality of the plan to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda is currently under review by the UK Supreme Court, with a decision expected later this year.
