Pope Francis is scheduled to appoint 21 new cardinals from diverse regions across the globe this Saturday, with most of them potentially participating in the election of his successor in the future.

This ecclesiastical event, known as a consistory, marks the ninth of Pope Francis’ pontificate since he assumed the papacy in 2013. It holds significant implications for the future course of the Catholic Church, particularly as the 86-year-old pope has indicated his openness to resigning due to declining health, following the precedent set by his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

The consistory will take place at 10:00 am local time in St. Peter’s Square. Among the 21 new cardinals, 18 are currently under the age of 80, making them eligible to participate as “cardinal electors” in the next conclave, the event where the next pope will be chosen.

As customary, the incoming cardinals will kneel before Pope Francis to receive their distinctive biretta, a four-cornered scarlet cap symbolizing the blood of Christ. They will also be presented with the cardinal’s ring, replacing the episcopal ring they received as bishops.

Following the ceremony, a traditional “courtesy visit” will take place, allowing the general public to enter the opulent halls of the Apostolic Palace to greet the newly appointed cardinals.

Cardinals are often regarded as the high-ranking officials and advisers of the pope within the Catholic Church. While some of them hold positions within the Roman Curia, the Vatican’s governing body, many continue to work in their home countries.

This group of newly appointed cardinals includes representatives from geopolitically sensitive regions, such as the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, who oversees the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, and the bishop of Hong Kong, whose role is crucial in managing the Church’s relationship with communist China.

Several of the newly appointed cardinals already hold key positions within the Curia, including the prefect for the Dicastery of the Eastern Churches, the head of the influential Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, and the leader of the Dicastery for Bishops.

After this consistory, there will be a total of 137 cardinal electors, with approximately 99 of them appointed by Pope Francis. This has led to increased scrutiny of his choices, as many observers speculate about the potential direction the Church may take in the future. Pope Francis has been committed to elevating clergy from developing nations, aligning with his vision of diversity and inclusivity within the Church.

This emphasis on diversity has fueled speculation that the next pope may share similar values with Francis, prioritizing tolerance and a focus on addressing the needs of the poor and marginalized. It’s worth noting that a significant proportion of the cardinal electors appointed by Francis come from regions where Christianity is growing, such as Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Despite the declining influence of Catholicism in Europe, the continent continues to be represented among the new cardinals. The appointments include a Swiss prelate serving as the Holy See’s apostolic nuncio to Italy (equivalent to an ambassador), as well as archbishops from Lodz in Poland, Madrid in Spain, and the bishop of Ajaccio in Corsica.

The youngest among the new cardinals is the 49-year-old bishop of Setubal, Portugal, known for organizing World Youth Day in Lisbon. Americo Aguiar will be the second-youngest member of the College of Cardinals, right behind Giorgio Marengo, the apostolic prefect of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
