Ugandan journalist Ashraf Kasirye, who sustained head injuries in 2020 during a clash between security forces and supporters of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, has undergone a successful skull surgery in the United States of America.
Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, confirmed the news of Kasirye’s surgery, stating that the journalist had undergone a major procedure to address the injuries he sustained when he was shot in the head during the 2020 presidential campaign. Kasirye was reportedly shot at close range by a security operative, Enock Abaine, who was then the Regional Police Commander of Masaka.
In his statement, Kyagulanyi demanded justice against Abaine and other individuals involved in the incident. He expressed his wishes for Kasirye’s quick recovery and emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for such actions accountable.
On December 27, 2020, Kasirye was allegedly injured as police dispersed Kyagulanyi’s supporters in Masaka District. The incident occurred during a confrontation between security forces and NUP supporters at a checkpoint in Kyabakuza. Initially, it was reported that Kasirye was shot, but later, police spokesperson Fred Enanga claimed that the journalist was injured by a teargas canister during the dispersal.
Kasirye, who is currently in the United States, had posted on social media before the surgery, expressing his hope for a successful procedure. The surgery aimed to repair his skull, which was damaged as a result of the incident.
NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya also posted on social media, expressing happiness and excitement over Kasirye’s successful operation. Rubongoya called for justice to be served against those responsible for what he described as “crimes against humanity.”
