Uganda is currently investigating allegations that a former senior official of the International Criminal Court (ICC) was involved in funding the notorious Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group known for its brutal activities in Uganda and neighboring countries. Brigid Inder, a former special adviser on gender to the former ICC prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, has been accused of facilitating and financing Joseph Kony, the leader of the LRA, between 2006 and 2017.

Kony, who is still at large, led the LRA in a violent rebellion over three decades ago, attempting to enforce his own version of the Ten Commandments in northern Uganda. This insurgency resulted in widespread terror and violence, affecting several countries in the region.

The allegations against Inder have been made by numerous victims of the LRA, as disclosed in a press release issued by a lawyer representing former child soldiers of the group. Uganda’s attorney general, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, confirmed that investigations into the claims are underway. If the allegations are substantiated, the ICC official could face prosecution.

Brigid Inder has vehemently denied the allegations, categorically refuting any involvement in funding the LRA’s activities. She stated that she has never met Joseph Kony, never provided him with money, and has not engaged in any activities supporting the LRA’s military ambitions. She attributed the allegations to a disgruntled former employee who was dismissed from her organization in 2014.

The LRA’s insurgency resulted in the deaths of over 100,000 people and the abduction of 60,000 children. The group’s violence extended beyond Uganda, affecting Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Joseph Kony in 2005, charging him with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
