The Ugandan government has entered into a partnership with Turkish construction firm Summa to construct a state-of-the-art multipurpose indoor sports complex in Kampala. This facility, with a seating capacity of 15,000 people, will be located at the National Council of Sports (NCS) premises in Lugogo.
President Yoweri Museveni, accompanied by First Lady Janet Museveni, met with sports state minister Peter Ogwang and Summa Construction Company officials to discuss the project. The President welcomed Summa to Uganda and assured the company of the government’s support for the complex’s construction.
The multipurpose indoor sports complex will feature:
- A multipurpose indoor arena seating 15,000 people.
- A small indoor sports arena with a seating capacity of 3,000 people.
- A 25-meter swimming pool with eight lanes.
- A multi-purpose standard pitch.
- An athlete hostel accommodating 60 people.
- An accommodation facility with 120 rooms.
- A showroom.
- A shopping center.
- A state-of-the-art fitness gym.
The existing sports facilities at Lugogo do not meet the standards for hosting international competitions, and this new complex aims to rectify that. Minister Ogwang emphasized the need for improved sports infrastructure to support the growing talent in various sports disciplines in Uganda.
The project, located in the upscale Kololo neighborhood of Kampala, is expected to increase non-tax revenue from around $270,000 annually to approximately $22 million per annum. It will strengthen talent identification and development, providing a platform for local talent and increasing youth participation in sports.
The project manager of Summa Construction Company, Murat Altun, expressed the company’s commitment to completing the project on time, citing their successful track record in various countries, including neighboring Rwanda.
This ambitious project is set to become a source of national pride and elevate Uganda’s sports infrastructure to international standards.
