The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) is facing significant upheaval as its Chairman, Michael Nuwagaba, and CEO, Allan Mugume, have submitted their resignations. This rare move comes after a period of turmoil within the association, which had previously been considered a model of stability.

Nuwagaba cited career and personal reasons for his resignation, while Mugume referenced personal reasons as well. In addition to their individual circumstances, recent divisions within the UCA board likely influenced their decisions.

One major point of contention among board members has been the contract of Cricket Cranes coach Laurence Mahatlane. While Nuwagaba and Mugume were reportedly in favor of extending his contract, other board members disagreed. Mahatlane’s contract is set to expire at the end of October, and he is said to have received offers from South Africa. His departure just days before the ICC T20 World Cup Africa Regional Qualifier in Namibia will leave Uganda without a coach.

Nuwagaba, who proposed a 30-day transition period for the identification of his successor, will leave the UCA before Mahatlane, bringing an end to his second two-year term. During his tenure, Uganda achieved significant successes on the cricket pitch, including regional and continental T20 titles, victories in the Victoria Cup and Capricorn Quadrangular, and an appearance at the men’s U-19 World Cup.

Nuwagaba had also prioritized the development of facilities for cricket in Uganda, stating that land acquisition was crucial for the association. His resignation, along with that of Mugume, will present a temporary crisis for the UCA as it navigates these challenges and seeks to fulfill its priorities.
