Volker Perthes, the United Nations envoy to Sudan, has announced his resignation, citing the escalating conflict in the country. The Sudanese conflict, which began in April between rival military factions, has been characterized by violence and has the potential to escalate into a full-blown civil war. Perthes’ resignation comes more than three months after Sudan declared him unwelcome in the country due to the ongoing war.

The conflict has led to the displacement of approximately five million people, with clashes occurring between Sudanese armed forces and rival paramilitary groups, particularly the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In his final speech to the UN Security Council, Perthes criticized Sudan’s military ruler, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and RSF chief Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti.

Perthes accused these leaders of choosing to plunge the country into war, resulting in a tragic legacy of human rights abuses. He specifically blamed the RSF for acts of sexual violence, looting, and killings in areas under its control. Additionally, Perthes condemned the Sudanese armed forces for their indiscriminate aerial bombings.

During his address to the Security Council, reports emerged of another atrocity in Nyala, Darfur, where medics were dealing with the aftermath of air strikes that claimed the lives of 40 people. This incident followed the deaths of more than 50 people in similar attacks on the previous Sunday.

One concerning aspect of the conflict is that RSF fighters are located in densely populated urban areas, leading the Sudanese military to view these areas as legitimate targets. The situation in Sudan remains complex and fraught with humanitarian concerns as the conflict continues to escalate.
