Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and a member of the National Unity Party (NUP), has pledged support for Mohammad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, who is currently undergoing specialized treatment abroad.

In a statement released on Monday, Mpuuga confirmed that Ssegirinya is receiving medical treatment in the Netherlands for various health conditions, including skin cancer, lung, and liver complications. Mpuuga highlighted that the office had learned of Ssegirinya’s condition last week and had reached out to him.

Mpuuga stated, “The office has been following this matter to ensure that our colleague is supported through the proper procedures well known to him.” He also communicated with the NUP party, including President Robert Kyagulanyi, to address the situation.

Chris Obore, the Director of Communication and Public Affairs at Parliament, emphasized that the House cannot neglect any member of parliament facing health complications. He noted that there is an insurance scheme in place for each member and their immediate family. However, for medical treatment abroad, Parliament only covers the expenses after clearance by the Medical Board, as per legal provisions.

Obore criticized Ssegirinya for seeking medical attention abroad without the necessary clearance from the Medical Board, and without notifying the Speaker and Leader of the Opposition. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the law when it comes to the use of public funds.

The support promised by both Parliament and the NUP underscores the importance of providing assistance and following proper procedures to ensure the well-being of elected representatives facing health challenges.
