Ugandan MPs Propose Total Ban On Sports Betting

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa in Parliament

Members of Parliament sitting on the parliamentary committee on Commission’s Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises -COSASE want betting and gaming abolished in Uganda.

This was after MPs found out while scrutinizing the auditor general’s report for the financial year 2021-2022 that all the gaming machines being used by different betting and gaming companies are fake and substandard thus cheating Ugandans.

The Committee basing on the report further tasked the officials from National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board led by their Chief Executive Officer Denis Ngabirano to explain why they license betting companies to operate using fake betting machines.

In his response, Ngabirano told the committee that they licensed all the companies carrying out the betting and gaming business in the country and after writing to the Uganda national bureau of standards to test the standards of the machines.

He added that UNBS told them that they don’t have the laboratory which can check the standards of the betting and gaming machines which annoyed the MPs thus directing for the destruction of all fake and substandard betting machines.
