Police in Rukungiri District are holding a 28-year-old man for allegedly murdering his 65-year-old  biological father in front of his grandchildren.

We’ve learnt that the incident took place during the late hours of Monday, July 17, 2023, in Kateramo village, Kikongi parish, Bwambara sub-county in Rukungiri district.

John Mbanganisa, a 65-year-old peasant farmer, was strangled to death by his own son, Justus Byamukama, a 28-year-old casual worker in the same village.

According to a statement issued by Elly Maate, the Kigezi Police region spokesman, the suspect returned home and knocked on the door. One of the grandchildren, Evans Niwahereza, 12, heard the knock and opened the door. Upon entering, the suspect went straight for his father and threatened to beat him. In a brief exchange of words, the deceased cautioned his son against provoking him and asked him to leave and go to his home at Rwenshama. However, the suspect instead became violent against his father, picked up a walking stick, and started hitting him.

The grandchildren, who were present during the incident, witnessed the suspect grab his father’s neck and throw him on the bed. Despite the deceased’s attempts to fight back and disengage from his son, they were futile. The suspect proceeded to strangle his father to death as the grandchildren wailed for help.

The shocked grandchildren made an alarm, calling on neighbours for rescue. One of the neighbours, Edson Kamani, and others responded to the alarm, but the suspect had already fled the scene and was headed towards Kateramo trading centre.

They immediately alerted the defence secretary, Muyambi Protazi, who followed the suspect and apprehended him. The area chairperson, John Tumushabe, alerted the police from Bikurungu Police Post, who arrived at the scene and took the suspect into custody.

The police investigators checked for the deceased’s body, which was abandoned on his bed, and took it to the mortuary at Rwakabengo Health Centre II for a postmortem. The police registered the case as murder on file SD 02/18/07/2023, and inquiries continued. This incident has left the community in shock and mourning, and the family of the deceased is now seeking justice.
